Ironman UK 2009 - Bolton

The email from Ironman UK 2009 has arrived and the location has been announced. Ironman UK 2009 will be in Bolton.

Bugger!

No offence intended to Bolton, for all I know it may be a very nice place, but it is not just down the road anymore. There is very little chance of me getting to ride the course beforehand and now I need to consider accommodation for the weekend. This is making me sound a bit like a spoilt child, I know, but I was looking forward to a local race (for local people, there's nothing for you here!).

Oh well, if Bolton is the chosen location then Bolton is where I will go. In the grand scheme of things the issues caused by the distant location are fairly minor compared with the commitment and effort required to get prepared for the race and is no worse than lots of other people had to put up with getting to Sherborne in previous years.

My entry is in and I have paid my money. Suddenly the 2nd August 2009 doesn't seem very far away(though Bolton still does).

Ha ha. You have all the same thoughts as me! I thought Bolton! Where's that? I come from Dorset originally and saw it as a 'return home', but Bolton! But I entered and going further north than I have ever been before!

Good luck in your training.

How dare you use the 'C' word on my blog. I have never and will never play for a team from Camborne. My family would disown me. I am a Redruth man through and through, apart from the bits that are Ivel.

Well looks like a mini break in Bolton then. How romantic I shall try and be of service to you.
I'm sure it will be wonderful.

Bolton.
If you're new to the area, make sure you get some hill training in. The cycling course for the Commonwealth Games caught out many riders.

Well done for entering IMUK but Bolton far away? Except for those south of the M25 Sherbourne may as well be on the moon with limited overpriced accomodation come IMUK time. Within 45 mins of Bolton you have Manchester Preston and Liverpool, plenty of accomodation which will not see a sudden hike in prices.
Good luck

I know Sherborne is a long way for some people but it isn't for me. Since I live 8 miles from Sherborne accommodation was not going to be a problem either.

I am sure a lot of people are really pleased that the Ironman is going to be closer to them this year and easier for them to get to. But for me it is a long way away.

Bring a 39-23 sprocket for the bike leg... we have some things up here called 'hills', 'wind' and 'rain'. You might not have heard of them on the south coast! ;)

I am a rugby forward so I am not built for going up hills. Since I am a coward on the bike I am no good at going down them either.

So I hate hills and am not too keen on the wind and rain either, this should be fun.

Was out training on the bike & criss-crossed the bike route a few times, then watched the run. Certainly nailed it with the weather... best day for nearly a month.

Hope you all enjoyed it! Apparently up here for 3-5years.

The surroundings were very nice. The area at the top of the hill was especially good, I love places like that. All the people we saw in Bolton were very supportive and welcoming.

All in all it was a great day. We were very lucky with the weather, it was terrible before and has been since.
